2021 Home Organizing Challenge. Week 2: Junk Drawer Organization

What’s in your Junk Drawer?

Hi everyone. Week 1 is over. How did it go for you? I tried to keep the tasks very manageable. This week we’ll dive in a little bit deeper.

Next, we will target our junk drawer. People often ask me where they should begin organizing, and I always tell them to start with the junk drawer. It’s one space, often can be done within the hour and includes items we’re typically not sentimental about (so it’s easier to make decisions).

Junk Drawer Organization

The steps I take for organizing a junk drawer is pretty much similar to how I would tackle any space. They are what I call, my standard organization process. Use these steps to organize almost any space in your home!

Often times the junk drawer becomes a mishmash of odds and ends. We might toss in our receipts, broken items that need fixing, items not in their proper home.

What you need before starting: a trash bag, recycling bag/bin, and small bins to group the items.

  1. Take everything out.

  2. Sort all the items into categories, using piles, bins, or boxes.

  3. Take a look at all the items laid out and figure out if you really need them all and if this spot makes the most sense for it to be. pro tip: If something is broken, get it fixed. The junk drawer should not be a temporary holding spot, or things will continue to get lost in there.

  4. It’s now time to containerize the items. This keeps groups together, so they don’t go flying around in your drawer. pro tip: empty phone cases make excellent drawer dividers if you’re running low on organizing products, even utensil holders or desk organizers can work!

  5. Maintain the space. A space will only stay organized if you continue to check in and make sure everything remains in order.

Here are some things that can stay in the junk drawer!
